3 STRATEGIES TO SUCCESSFULLY MANAGE A TRANSFORMATION IN LIFE
This started out as a quick, Happy Halloween to my family and a massive shout out and a great excuse to say hey to my friends around the world but writing this I realized there’s more to talk about. Really important things that are life changing and life altering and can freak us out at times.
Let me ask you…
Have you ever felt like you were going through some kind of massive movement in life? A massive transformation or transition?
I know I have, and its like the “old you” is done, done, and more done. I can tell you it happens to all of us and we are just like a caterpillar cacooning into a butterfly. It can happen man times in your life, but the “new you” isn’t fully cooked yet?
That’s a bit how I feel right now and have felt over the past three years. I have loved life so much with my little lady Signey in our lives, but having to slow down to coach and teach our sport it really showed me just how trapped people can be in life. They are stuck in the rat race of life and will never see or allow themselves out of that rat race. It sucks because it affects the many around them and can pull them all down because of not evolving and living a full life.
Right now there’s a massive alchemy happening inside me and I love it. But whether I like it or not, there is a risk when you return to the real world (what ever that is) the finished picture is not nor may it ever be ready to be revealed. Here is what I have to say about that, don’t procrastinate, read the blog post from last week Progress not Perfection and get out there and suck it up buttercup.
Hey here’s the really wild part is it’s awesome and it’s totally exciting yet terrifying all at the same time. It can suck and be a real roller coaster of a ride figuring out your path to success.
If you’re going through anything similar, you need to know that you’re not alone.
And thankfully, there are some really easy, uncomplicated, uninvolved, effortless, painless, strategies you can use to manage the ever-changing mix of excitement and fear that come along with every transition – no matter what the size. Okay maybe not painless I will give you that.
Here we go!
1. Stay connected to your heart and your soul.
While you are in the transformation stages of life look at yourself in the mirror while you’re in transition and get to know you. You are the most important thing in your life first, because if you do not take care of you first how on earth will you be able to help others in the future. It’s tempting to close off the world in this time of change because so many people will tell you “No!”, “Nope you can’t do that!”, “That’s impossible!”, “Oh my goodness that is not allowed!”. People are TOXIC, especially in our world of sport and business.
Turing off your heart and soul is toxic and if you put up a protective shell that means you cannot grow exponentially.
Now think your like the Star Ship Enterprises from Star Trek, it has a special dish at the front of it that sends a special force field pulse out around the ships hull. It is clear, it is playable, it allows energy especially negative energy to be pushed away, but it i translucent and protects from danger.
People suck sometimes, and the people who actually that are breaking the rules negatively are the first people to point fingers to deflect the energy off of them and onto someone else. But more importantly the people who are doing something special, something with greatness keep going.
If you are holding yourself back from the pain people ignite, believe me push forward and away from the dangers. Your success is relying on your resiliency and ability to focus and do what it is you set out to do. If people say to you NO, okay say thank you and carry on. If people support you use that energy to propel you to the next level.
You must stay aware of when we should be fighting forward to advance and grow into your new self.
This is especially true for women. I believe in the special powers women have. I learned from my loving mother that even when a person is at their lowest of lows a lady has these special super powers men just don’t have. We men have other super powers woman don’t have either but it sure looks like women have an edge on us dudes.
It does not matter guy or girl when we find ourselves in a vulnerable space, it’s tempting to “tighten up” and get hard. This is the breaking point moment and if you chooses to stand strong for what you know is right we can make a valuable difference in the world.
Don’t do this tighten up thing! Trust me on this one. I’ve done it before in the most critical of times and believe me it’s not cute when it all come crashing down around you when everyone is watching. But on a side note if you harness the energy properly you can build your abilities and your empire stronger because your base is moldable, adaptable and useful.
In the Clint Eastwood movie Heart Break Ridge, I always loved the expression of him saying to the men in the movie, “SURRENDER IS NOT IN OUR CREED! You adapt. You overcome. You improvise. Let’s move.”
Your heart is your place of strength and wisdom. When you close off, you disconnect with your true source of power we die.
2. Never be afraid alone.
There’s a big myth that exists in our minds that admitting our fear somehow makes us weak or unsuccessful. That’s total baloney.
I feel fear regularly… like right now writing this blog post and especially when I’m in the midst of creating a lot of new stuff. I enjoy the hustle and the bustle but people are so use to getting screwed in this world left and right and from behind that there is little trust anymore. It really sucks.
When you step outside of the norms in sports, business, and life, expect some fear. Loads of it, but if you are like me you will embrace it too. Don’t let fear stop you. Yo know what to do! “You adapt. You overcome. You improvise. Let’s move.” See its true what Eastwood said now do it with a team so you can back one another up.
The best thing to do is to gently call yourself out on it and more importantly, call in a friend who will listen, maybe not understand but someone you can talk things through with and you can help to figure things out for yourself.
The secret is to share your fear from a neutral place (meaning: don’t freak out and believe your fearful thoughts) and allow your friend to “talk you back from the ledge.”
3. Put your excitement into action.
Okay if you have read this far, and you have listened to my voice with reason, and with every transition and transformation in life, there comes bursts of excitement and inspiration.
When you have one, get into immediate action and here’s what I mean.
Two weekends ago in Pittsburg Signey Jodeyne and I performed for a Disson Skating Special for ABC and we performed together for the very first time. Signey did great and well when you teach your kids to get going sometimes life just slows down and stops the show from starting.
So it was 5 min till show time and all the girls were in the change room getting ready and my little girl decided that she was going to be #1 in the #2 business just like her Papa Bear before the show. She was so excited and as a 3 year old you better go when you gotta go. So here is my little girl on the toilet saying “I’m not ready yet!” when the skaters are being called to stage. So like in Momma Bear team fashion Jodeyne, Nancy Karrigan, Kate Wiley (Paul Wileys Wife), Grandma Fontana (Sylvias Mom) all helping to get Signey ready to get her into costume. Anyhow the moral of the story is if you get excited for anything expect POOP to happen at the best of times. LOL!
While all this was going on I was bubbling with excitement about new opportunities like this happening for us. It’s beyond cool because if you live what you believe in people like Steve Dission and his awesome team of people see your true potential. Pete and Alysa and the team do so good and they really care for the people they work with and bring in. I am truly thankful for moments like this.
Okay… so on to the show and shows of the future. If you look at life there are very inspirational people everywhere to help inspire our insides and light your fire, but remember your spark might just be the spark of others along the way too.
Your ambition does not go unnoticed and Rich, Happy & Hot programs will see success if the people feel it to be genuine and from the heart. Today more than ever the more truthful you are to you, your friends, your customers we can be at peace with ourselves. The times of now unite people faster and stronger together and are so different from the past. History really does repeat itself but this time anything that’s been done before, can go way beyond cool in this day and age if you “BELIEVE IN YOU” .
Rather than just luxuriating in my excitement, I sat down with Jodeyne a with our good and brilliant friends Arlene Dutchak, Elvis Stojko, Lukasz Rozycki and Alexandra Schaumman and I took action talking about the future and where we want to take SEAJO to help our sport, your sport, Theatre and reignite the heart beat in the world with the freedom of skating and entertainment can bring to the world.
Over the past three years Jodeyne and I have mapped out a game plan, organized a time line, created content and then celebrated with playing on the beach with Signey and our Friends.
Transitions and Transformations and letting go of the past and focusing on the now and into the future spurs on creativity urging it to be brought to life. Strike while the iron is hot and go for it.
There’s a lot of action happening downstairs so I gotta run to the rink with the cast. It’s almost show time here in Niagara Falls Canada for Christmas On Ice with our friends from around the world. Off to my Home Club Skate Oakville we go! Woohoo!
Thanks, as always, for reading and I’m excited to share more about SeaJo’s evolution with you as it unfolds.
